Post-blank: 2024 Design Predictions
2024 is a continuation of all things post-blank in the design world. Refinements in functionalism paired with abstract yet distinct design choices will define design driven thinking approaching 2025. Post-blank is an idea I took from the book A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara in the chapter “The Postman.” A chapter in the book details a character who suffers from being the “Postman:” post-black, post-modern, post… you get it. 2024 will suffer the same title of being post-blank, as designers redefine what it means to design, especially in a modern world diluted with ideas of what the future should look like.

Trends to watch for:
Vertical lines, particularly in wood siding and accent pieces, such as a privacy wall.
Mass timber construction: many companies are considering scrapping the use of concrete, as it the production accounts for 9%-10% of all greenhouse gas emissions.
Asymmetrical rooflines with a traditional take: honoring basic design choices with a twist.
Simplicity and functionalism: living in less excess, using only what we need.
